Allelon
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. - Galatians 6:16
Paul uses the Greek word allelon (one another) here and dozens of other times. It’s one of his most common ways to describe what church is. It means we’re all it in together - because now it might be me bearing your burden, but next week it’ll be you bearing mine. We one-another each other. We take turns being the giver and being the taker, and it all works out in God’s economy. As the great saint Henri Nouwen has said:
We all are bruised reeds, whether our bruises are visible or not. The compassionate life is the life in which we believe that strength is hidden in weakness and that true community is a fellowship of the weak.
- Henri Nouwen
Talk with Jesus about joining him in ‘the fellowship of the weak’ these days. Invite him to show you where you need some help carrying things and where you might have some extra strength to lend to someone else.
