Invitation to Discipleship
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. - Luke 6:12-16
One way to look at this passage is through the lease of three key relationships. Jesus connects UP to God in prayer (“Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God”). Jesus connects IN towards community by building a cohesive group to invest in (“he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them”). Jesus connects OUT on mission, by sending them out to serve the world (“whom he also designated apostles” - which means “sent-ones”).
Jesus is still in the habit of choosing disciples today, like you. So that means that each of us are invited into these healthy relationships UP with God, IN with community, and OUT on mission. Do you have a sense which of those you need to grow in as 2020 starts to unfold?
