Jesus and Caesar
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” - Luke 2:8-12
Today we’re going to do a little study. Compare the Scripture verses above to this inscription about Caesar Augustus. Take note of what is similar:
Providence has set everything in most perfect order by giving us Augustus, whom she filled with virtue that he might benefit humankind, sending him as a savior, both for us and for our descendants, that he might end war and arrange all things, and since he, Caesar, surpassing all previous Lords, and not even leaving any hope of future Lords surpassing what he has done. The birthday of the god Augustus was the beginning of the good news for the world that came by reason of him.” - Priene Calendar Inscription, 9 BC
What were the similarities and differences between these two ancient writings? What do the similarities and differences tell you about the two men who were described in them?
Now think about our world today - who are the Caesars today (think not just of people but of systems or ways of thing)? Talk with Jesus about the sorts of things that are coming up for you as you profess these thoughts.
