Nesting Blocks

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. - Romans 12:15

As Brenna Rubio pointed out on Sunday, our culture tends to separate people out by various markers, ranking us like a tower of nesting blocks, asking “Who’s on top and who’s not?.” And yet at the most fundamental level, we are truly human - beautifully made in God’s image and also sadly broken.

If we could identify with that inner core of human experience, perhaps we could step into our world rejoicing with those who rejoice and morning with those who mourn. In so many ways, the nesting block tower would not only fall down, but it would collapse nicely into the largest common denominator of our humanity - just like a set of nesting blocks.

Today spend some time praying for one friend who is grieving and give thanks with one friend who is rejoicing. And then ask for the grace to move off of the tower into a nesting-block attitude today, connecting with the humanity of every person you see.
