Today Could Be Your Day
When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. - Luke 5:20-25
After the paralyzed man endures what must have been an excruciatingly long theological debate - literally arguing over his body laying on the floor - he gets healed. He gets what he came for, what his friends brought him for.
What a huge relief to have your body working again, to have your life back. What a miracle. What a gift. Even though it’s not a gift that everyone gets (there were plenty of lepers in Jesus’s day who didn’t experience his healing), it’s worth holding on to the moment of healing and embracing it. Can you feel what it must have felt like for that man? What do you think was going through the hearts and minds of his friends? How about his family back home?
And what is the healing that you need, that you seek? Is it for yourself or for another? What would it look like to take a risk and go to Jesus, holding frail hope in your shaking hands as you go? Today could be your day…
