A New Way of Life
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
What Paul is writing about here can feel like a lot of work for those of us who are task oriented. Stopping and giving thanks, saying another prayer and choosing to be happy all day long, besides feeling impossible, just sounds really busy!
But what if there were virtually no words or even conscious thoughts involved in applying this verse? It wouldn’t feel so busy then, would it? Take a moment and imagine what it would be like to be one of those people who mysteriously has so much joy and spiritual energy and gratitude flowing out of them at all times that everyone around them notices. Sometimes we think of these people as saints (although, interestingly, that’s just the New Testament word in Greek for someone who follows Jesus).
The scriptures invite us into this kind of life. It’s not a life without suffering or sadness. On the contrary, Jesus freely tells his followers things like “You will be persecuted” (John 15:20) and “You will grieve” (John 16:20), so this is clearly not a denial of reality. But the invitation stands - to live joyfully, prayerfully, and gratefully - as a way of life.
Do you desire that kind of life? If so, talk with Jesus about your desire and ask for the grace to step into that life more fully.
