Are You Killing Someone's Dreams?
“Here comes that dreamer!” Joseph's brothers said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” Genesis 37:19-20
All the family tension built up into a raging fire of hatred, to the point that Joseph's brothers wanted to kill him. (Instead, they sold him into slavery - more about that this coming Sunday). They wanted to put an end to his dreams - which were from God, even though Joseph was really obnoxious about how he shared them (see yesterday's devotions for more on that).
Some of our families are that messed up, leading to physical violence. But Jesus makes sure we know that it's not just physical violence that ends dreams - it's anger. He equates the two in Matthew 5:21-22. Our dreams for a healthy family, our dreams for closeness with a parent or connection with a child - these are so easily destroyed by our anger. And Jesus isn't having it.
Today, think hard on your anger. Where does it come from? What triggers it? What would Jesus have you do with it? How is Jesus talking with you about it?
