Blessed to be a Blessing
One of the overarching themes of scripture is that God blesses us in part so that we can turn around and be a blessing to others. Way back at the beginning of the story, this is how God said it to Abraham:
I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing. - Genesis 12:1
It was never enough for someone just to be blessed by God. True blessing always carried with it the impulse to pass it on. In so many ways, God wants to use us to bless others so that they can go on and bless still more others. It’s a domino effect, staring with the Great Blesser and passing straight through us into the world.
What is your reaction to this setup that you are blessed to be a blessing? Do you tend to focus more on the feeling of responsibility of blessing others or the joy of it? Or, perhaps you get caught up on the first part - not really experiencing a lot of blessing yourself.
Talk with God honestly about what’s coming to mind for you.
