Breakfast with Jesus - Bill White
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. - John 21:12-13
This is one of the big Easter stories… and yet it was about having breakfast. There was no big teaching. Even the miraculous catch of fish right beforehand was sort of a blip in the narrative. Mostly it’s about Jesus not shaming his friends (who had betrayed him) and instead serving them breakfast.
I imagine that breakfast sometimes. What did they talk about? Were they just catching up on life (and, uh, afterlife)? And how long was it? you’d think Jesus might want to maximize his time on earth since he was about the ascend into heaven.
But apparently he was not in a rush. From everything we can tell, he just wanted to spend time with his friends. So he showed up at their workplace and brought food.
Maybe the biggest miracle of Easter this week is that eternal life starts over breakfast. It doesn’t require some big religious observance or intense experience. It’s all about Jesus in the ordinary. See if you can keep your eyes peeled for him today at work or school or just over breakfast.
