But we do see Jesus
The theme of the book of Hebrews is that Jesus is better than everything else. Better than the Law. Better than the earlier covenants. Better than the angels. Better than the sacrificial system.
One of the key reasons that Jesus keeps getting highlighted as better than everything else is that we can relate to Jesus. He’s just like us. He suffered like we do.
Early on in the book, the author points out that it can be very disorienting in our lives not to be able to see the world lining up with how God says it should be. All the challenges in the world can cause us to struggle, because God, after all, is invisible. But then the author turns to Jesus.
Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. But we do see Jesus - Hebrews 2:8-9
The fact that Jesus was human like us makes all the difference and makes him relatable. And more than that, it gives us hope. That’s because the world doesn’t make sense… but at least we have God-in-the-flesh in Jesus reminding us that God knows that the world is messed up. God knows our pain. God knows our doubt. And by keeping our eyes on Jesus we can muddle through.
What helps you to keep your eyes on Jesus?
