Cisterns

The living water we talked about yesterday sometimes just doesn’t seem like it’s enough. We end up hoarding it or we ignore it, we distrust it or we get distracted from it. And then we try to figure our own way to flourish. This disconnection from the Source of all life doesn’t end up helping us at all.

With these images of living water in mind, the prophet Jeremiah speaks for God to the people:

My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. - Jeremiah 2:13

A cistern was a huge pot underground for holding water… and you could imagine how over time they would crack and leak. Perhaps you feel ‘leaky’ these days from trying to white-knuckle your way through the pandemic.

Today, let’s ignite the prophetic imagination God’s given each of us. Imagine yourself digging out the space for an underground reservoir of water, a "cistern."  What does digging to try to get what you need to flourish look like in your life?  Where do you sense cracks in the system - where does life seem to seep away fruitlessly?
