Finding Jesus in the News

Today we look at the beginning of the Christmas story. Note how it starts with the geopolitical situation of the day. Embedded in these few lines is inherent commentary on governance, power, taxation, oppression, economics, ethnic issues., and more.

Typically we read it in a cursory way, looking forward to angels and shepherd and a manger. But seriously look at this. Read the words. Think about the massive implications of what these lines are talking about, the political forces at play, the impact on ordinary people, and the ensuing hardships faced by millions.

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. - Luke 2:1

Now think about the news today (you might even want to bring up a news app or scan a newspaper). What are the very real forces at play in politics and economics. What kinds of migration do you see being written about; what implications are there for the millions of ‘little’ people who are not moving the levers of power?

And then take a few breaths and whisper to yourself:

This is the world you entered.

These are the people you love.

Help me see you at work today.
