Flipping the Script 2
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” - Mark 9:33-37
Jesus graciously invites his friends to rethink their way of being in the world. He invites them to notice little children rather than celebrities. He invites them to serve all kinds of people, not just their ‘betters.’ He reminds them that the little and the least and the last matter immensely to God.
Do you sense Jesus inviting you into this way of being in the world?
Perhaps some of this identify with being the last, and this is a wonderful invitation to discover our true value in God’s eyes and to be lifted up in the community. Perhaps some of us identify with being the first, and this is a wonderful invitation to find deeper meaning in service and sacrifice.
Take with Jesus about this way of living.
