God of National Crises
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. - Psalm 46:6, 10
Can you relate to the author of this prayer-song - does it feel like nations are in uproar? Do you sense various kingdoms rising and falling? If so, what do you do with the vulnerability that comes with feeling politically or nationally insecure?
The author of this prayer has an encounter with God, who speaks directly to the situation at hand. The answer is very simple: be still. But isn’t that the hardest thing?
And then comes the refrain that God will handle all the challenges in the world - God is over all the nations, not just America. And our fortress was never our country - it was always our God.
Spend a few moments today reflecting on how you relate to the political and national crises of our day and what it might mean for you to slow down and let God be God.
