God Weeps
A prophecy against Moab:
Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in the night.
Kir in Moab is ruined, destroyed in the night...
My heart cries over Moab;
her fugitives flee as far as Zoar,
as far as Eglath Shelish.
- Isiah 15:1, 5
Jesus wept. - John 11:35
God weeps.
How does that reality sit with you? This is no impersonal force, no cosmic idea – but actual Personhood, with deep emotion. This is no distant “Big Man Upstairs” or one-dimensional Almighty Power – but actual Personhood with real empathy.
But more importantly, this is not some theological truth. This is YOUR God. This is the One who sees your pain, your loss, your angst, your illness, your family dysfunction, your financial strain – and who does not stay distant.
It can be painful to think of God as this close and present because it raises all sorts of questions about why you were allowed to experience such pain in the first place. It can feel threatening to think of God as this close and present because it means that you can’t just go on with your life pretending God’s not intimately involved with you. And it can be incredibly comforting to think of God as this close and present because that means you are not – and never have been – alone or abandoned.
What does it mean to you that God weeps?
