Hit By a Bus on Election Week

One City Church person said that the intensity of the election this week hit them like a bus. Another said they’d been ‘so zen all day until I got one text and then I started checking my phone every 5 seconds.’ Others cried, some napped, and there’s been a disproportionate consumption of excess Halloween candy reported throughout the church.

It’s been that kind of week.

David had a few weeks like that. Here’s part of a prayer he wrote during one of them:

My back is filled with searing pain;
there is no health in my body.
I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I groan in anguish of heart.
All my longings lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing is not hidden from you.
- Psalm 38:7-9

Take a moment now and get in touch with your body. Take a couple of slow, deep breaths. Start at your toes and focus your attention on all the parts of your body. Is there ‘searing pain’ somewhere? Do some parts ‘groan’ or ‘long’ or ‘sigh’? Would you honor these sensations and lay them open before Yahweh now, like David did?

Take a few minutes and tell God what you need today to make it through. You may consider closing with the closing words of David’s prayer in Psalm 38:

Do not be far from me, my God.
Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.
- Psalm 28:21-22
