I am very Busy - Billy Minshall
I am very Busy
We are busy. There’s work, school, kids, maybe church, family and pets. Even my retired friends are busy. Why? What are we busy doing? I mean, no one’s that important are they?
I think that technology makes me busier than I need to be. Do I need to respond to every single message that someone sends me? I don’t want to be rude and I don’t want people to think that I don’t care, because I do. That said, some of the excess busy-ness can come from texts or emails or social media.
Example: My husband just texted me “do we need bread?” I replied, “yes.” He then “liked” my reply, which begat another reply “they only have ground coffee and not whole bean” to which I said, “that’s fine…” and so on. While I am grateful that my husband went to the store, these things can add up throughout the day. Combine back and forth texting with social media use, and suddenly four hours of my day have vanished! And for what?
Luke 5:16 reminds me that Jesus himself “withdrew to the wilderness and prayed.” People were pretty much swarming him in search of healing, answers and miracles. So he had to retreat.
But I am not Jesus, nor are people seeking such big things from me. But I do think I am called to retreat, if only for a few moments. To reflect. To just stop for a minute and think. How do I want to spend my time? Does this need my attention? What happens if I just sit still and stop responding? My guess is that the planet will continue to spin, the sun will rise with no help from me, and the moon will still move the tide. And maybe I will have coffee and bread tomorrow morning, and maybe I won’t.
And either way, it will be okay.
