Where Do I Find Peace?
Brenna and Israel pointed out on Sunday that in the Ancient Near East, food was often a symbol of shalom - that perfect, communal, bodily, emotional, relational peace that is God’s goodness spread over the people.
The final picture in the Bible of God’s relationship with humanity is a picture of a feast - and a wedding feast at that. In the last chapter of the Bible it says “The Spirit and the bride say, “Come,” “ which is a culmination of the images of feasting that are woven throughout the book. Let’s look at this picture more closely and let it speak to us today.
Just a few chapters before the end of Revelation, the feast is described this way:
Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder:
“Praise the Lord!
For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.
Let us be glad and rejoice,
and let us give honor to him.
For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb,
and his bride has prepared herself.
She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.”
For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.
Revelation 19:6-8
Let that passage sink in and talk with Jesus about it.
What does that image of shalom in Revelation 19 stir up in you?
Do you hear an invitation or a challenge?
Is there something for you to receive here or perhaps to do?
