Is Self-Care Selfish?

What does it look like to have a healthy trust of your own instincts and to practice in self-care, and yet also not to be self-centered or proud? This is one of the many tensions we get to hold as those who follow Jesus. And there’s no simple rule to follow, no checkbox you can mark in order to guarantee you’re doing it right - because that would be kind of arrogant, wouldn’t it?

So ponder these two insights, one from Scripture and another from a modern perspective:

Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

- Proverbs 28:26

It seems those most likely to miss God’s work in the world are those most convinced they know exactly what to look for, the ones who expect God to play by the rules.

- Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church

How do you sense the Spirit speaking to you about this tension? What is the heart attitude that is involved in proper self-care versus an arrogant certitude? What might God be saying in this area for you today?
