Jesus and Black Friday
“Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” - Jesus, in Luke 12:15
Jesus was not a capitalist. He wasn’t a big supporter of Black Friday. He didn’t carry a wallet or even have any money himself. He said intentionally provocative things like, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor” (Luke 12:33). The earliest leaders of the church didn’t have money either. And when the early church gathered together, they shared what money they had: “No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had” (Acts 4:32).
These can be unnerving realities for those of us caught up in a culture that loves stuff, is built on spending money, and gives priority to those with more.
How do you reconcile the way of Jesus with how you think about money? Take time to talk honestly with God about these things today.
