Learning to Breath

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. - Colossians 3:15

That’s the passage that Brenna Rubio read to start the service at the beach yesterday. Then she had us do a simple exercise in embodiment. She invited us to take a few deep breaths, breathing in to the word ‘peace’ and breathing out to the word ‘blessing.’

We’re going to do that simple exercise today as our devotional. It’s not very fancy, but since it can be hard to figure out what it means to love God with our body, taking some time to work on an embodiment practice can be a real asset to learning how to love God.

So breathe in and whisper to yourself (or say in your mind) ‘Peace.”

  • You might imagine God pouring out peace on you.

  • You might imagine a favorite place for you.

  • You might focus on how a deep breath seems to calm your body

Regardless, do this a few times. Be willing to follow where the Spirit seems to be leading in these moments.

And as you breath out, whisper to yourself ‘Blessing.”

  • You may just enjoy the blessing of being in your body, being present to yourself.

  • You may have a sense of God pouring out blessing through you, like a waterfall overfilling a pool.

  • You might bring to mind some of the people you are going to face today and envision how to be a blessing to them.

Regardless, do this a few times. Be willing to follow where the Spirit seems to be leading in these moments.
