Let My People Go

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go. - Exodus 8:1

This verse was often on the lips of the 4 million enslaved Americans (they were American not in the sense of having citizenship since that was denied them, but in the sense of having residence here). It’s the cry of an oppressed people against the oppressor: LET MY PEOPLE GO!

Unfortunately, that is still a cry in our country for the offspring of those same slaves. Mass incarceration has a drastically disproportionate effect on African Americans, as does police brutality, not to mention everything from infant mortality to income disparity. As you think about the injustice of our country, can you hear the Lord saying to us all, LET MY PEOPLE GO?

Does a particular person, whether friend or elected official, come to mind as you think of applying pressure to release those oppressed by power structures? Pray for them, and pray for an opportunity to use your voice on behalf of justice.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. - Proverbs 31:8
