Listen to Your Life
“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” - Paul writing to his young apprentice, mentor to mentee, in 2 Timothy 2:1-2
In Sunday’s sermon, Cody Miller took us on a deep dive into one of the practices the church at its best invites its people into, over and over again - the practice of paying attention to the daily stuff of life and finding the holy within it. The big questions, the beauty, the growing edges and opportunities to heal… It’s a listening that’s both reflective (you pause to recognize God at work below the surface and ponder exactly how) and responsive (acting on your realizations - leaning into that good work God’s up to). It’s hearing and responding. We often call these holy moments “kairos” - literally, the opportune time - the “aha” moment.
What have the kairos moments in your life been lately? What patterns have you been noticing? Or perhaps it’s a new challenge, a new joy, a new sense of wholeness. What’s going on below the surface of your life, and how is God inviting you to lean in?
Talk with Jesus a little about these things after you read the quote below:
“If I were called upon to state in a few words the essence of everything I was trying to say both as a novelist and as a preacher it would be something like this: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.” - Frederick Buechner
