Meditations with Mom

Below is the entirety of Psalm 131 , a prayer David wrote to help himself calm down, focus, and connect with God. The key image that David meditated on was God as mother.

To pray this prayer, read though it once and then close your eyes. Peek out at a single line and then close them again, resting in the meaning of those words and images. Do this as you go through the Psalm a second time.

And then, instead of reading the Psalm a third time, just close your eyes entirely and reflect on the images that you have now read through two times. Sit with those images, inviting the Holy Spirit to help you connect in new and deep ways with God.

Psalm 131

A song of ascents. Of David

My heart is not proud, Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
    or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.
