More Than "Let God and Let God"
On Sunday Brenna talked about how so many times these days Christians quoted “Let go and let God” during a very stressful election process. Often she saw it used when someone - often someone from the margins - was expressing pain or exasperation, and that saying was being used to brush aside their emotions and over-spiritualize a very difficult time.
The Bible talks plenty about surrendering - it is the essence of true humility, after all. In humility we recognize that God is indeed in control. But the Bible balances that sense of humble surrender with a bent towards doing real good. In one of the most famous lines from the Old Testament, God says this:
Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God - Micah 6:8
Do you see the balance? It’s not just “Let Go and Let God.” Yes, humble surrender is there. But it’s combined with DOING justice and LOVING mercy. ‘Do justice’ could not be a more fitting phrase - or a more active one - given our current political setting.
Do you have a sense of whether you need to step into the more passive humility of surrender or the more active work of justice these days? What might it look like to do both?
Talk with Jesus about these things.
