One Is Easily Overpowered
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. - Ecclesiastes 4:12
The book of Ecclesiastes is full of wise words and is often skeptical of worldly forms of success like money or fame. Early on it points out that going solo is not the way to a fulfilled life.
The phrase “one may be overpowered” could easily refer to some sort of physical combat. But it could also refer to some of the deeper work we all have to do - the ‘shadow work’ as they call it in spiritual direction. Sometimes our self-loathing overpowers us or our anger… but having a friend who knows and loves you, well that can make all the difference, right?
And then there’s the adde strength of a third friend - now there’s even more resilience. This is sort of a picture of community. Of course we need the close friend, but we also need a village to turn to when things get tough.
What are some ways you might build healthy communities this summer?
