One More Never
Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” - Matthew 26:33-34
On Monday we looked at three of Peter’s big ‘never’ statements. Here’s one more.
What do you think is really going on inside of Peter - why do you think Peter says ‘never’ here? Seriously, take a moment and think about it.
It’s hard to have your image of yourself shattered. Especially when it’s held together by the bubblegum of overconfidence or the flimsy paper masks of pretending to be something you aren’t. Can’t you imagine Peter thinking: I’m not the kind of person who would fail my friends. And yet he is.
And yet Jesus is not surprise. Instead, he keeps on keeping on. He heads to the garden. He faces the tests. He goes to the cross. And all along the way he invites Peter to join him where he can. Peter at least followed him at a distance - which is more than most of the disciples could claim. So let’s not get down on Peter. Instead, let’s empathize.
It’s hard to fail. It’s hard to see yourself in a new, unflattering light. And yet Jesus already has seen that side of you and loves you like crazy anyway. What to do with this resilient Savior!
Take some time here to just be with your Savior today, with as little of your false self showing as possible.
