Our Story Means Taking Risks
Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story. - Psalm 107:2
Almost always, telling our story involves risk. It means lowering our guard and letting people know us.
But risk is almost always what our stories are about. At some point we took a risk. We tried something new. We attempted to fix a relationship. We took a new job. Or we allowed a new way of thinking to take hold in our minds. So much of our stories involve the risks we took and the failures or successes or just outright surprises that met us there.
Today, as we look at Psalm 107, we’re looking at the risk-takers. These are folks who gambled with their finances as merchants and who gambled with their lives as sailors. They risked it all to travel the world looking for adventure and/or wealth. And they were humbled in the process. They faced their own limits. They realized they needed help.
As you read through this prayer today, ask yourself: where are you taking a risk these days? Ask yourself: what am I attempting that requires God’s intervention if it’s going to truly happen? (the answer is as likely some new business venture as it is some new way you’d like to develop in character or faith). Talk with Jesus about what’s standing out to you.
Some went out on the sea in ships;
they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They saw the works of the Lord,
his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
they were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for humankind. - Psalm 107:23-31
