Rooted and Established in Love
Yesterday our friend Justin McArdle preached about attachment theory - the approach to therapy that helps us sort through how to form stable, healthy, secure attachments to God and others. In particular he talked about how important it is for us to heal when our parents didn’t form in us the kind of robust, confident attachment we needed in our lives.
A huge piece of that healing is learning to be grounded in love - which can be a long process for a lot of us.
One thing that encourages me on this journey is to know that this is exactly what the Spirit was talking with the Apostle Paul about twenty centuries ago when he was writing to the church in Ephesus. Paul is writing down what he prays for his friends in that city and this is how he articulates it:
I pray that you would be rooted and established in love… - Ephesians 3:17
Would you pray that for yourself today? Maybe there are a few other people who come to mind who need that sort of grounding today - would you pray for them?
