Grounded in Love & Smashing Hierarchies
Sometimes when we read about Jesus washing the disciples’ feet we use the images there in ways that he never intended. The idea of ‘servant leadership’ was not a business fad Jesus started to produce larger churches or more successful companies. Jesus was smashing the hierarchies of his day, deconstructing the power structures until they were almost unrecognizably flat. The idea of a Rabbi and Lord acting as a slave was outlandish - and now we Christians think that God is just like Jesus. How incredible to rethink of the Almighty as The Servant!
Notice what enables Jesus to go on this incredible journey of emptying himself of all but love. Take time to ponder Jesus’s core identity - which is always essentially to any real change we want to see happen in ourselves and our world. How might God be inviting you to realign your core identity with Christ in order to empower you on the journey breaking down hierarchies?
Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him... - John 13:2-5
