The God Behind the Curtain

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.  After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
     - John 13:2-5

When Jesus was crucified one of the results was that the Temple curtain, which separated the Holy of Holies from the people, was torn down the middle. It was yet another picture that the distanced between God and people had been bridged. It also showed the kind of God that had been hiding behind the curtain, so to speak. The God who was really there was not an angry God or a judgmental God. As it turned out, the true God on the other side of the curtain was just like Jesus.

Let's spend some time today remembering the kind of God we have. Imagine yourself there at that table two thousand years ago, with Jesus at the head. He gets up on puts on an apron and grabs a pitcher of water and heads over to you. Yes you. And he starts to take off your shoes and to wash your feet. How does it feel? Do you resist? What's he saying to you about his love for you?

Sit with him. Allow him to care for you, to serve you.
