The Prayer of Doubt

In expressing all the complexities and contradictions of human experience, the psalms act as good psychologists. They defeat our tendency to try to be holy without being human first.

  • The Message of the Psalms, Walter Brueggemann

To start our week praying through doubt, look over the prayer below (yes, it’s from the Bible!). If you were to be that honest about your doubts and reservations about God’s involvement in your life, how would you say it? Take a few minutes to breath deeply and to get yourself centered. Then pray though these lines from Psalm 13, pausing after each line to put that line in your own words, being as raw as you can be.

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
- Psalm 13:1-4
