The Slow Journey of Seeing God

Do not run until your feet are bare
and your throat is dry.
But you said, ‘It’s no use!
I love foreign gods,
and I must go after them.’ - Jeremiah 2:25

God invites us to slow down, especially on weeks like this one. What if we took some deep breaths and tried to take our food off the gas - not just waiting until Christmas Day to fall into an exhausted heap?

Along the way we might learn to take another small step on the slow journey of seeing God in our daily lives. Instead of rushing through each day, pausing and praying is a different way to be. Take a few moments to reflect on this well-known poet’s story of conversion. Can you sense the invitation to play the long game of prayer? What might that look like for you today?

Maybe saints turn to God to exalt him. The rest of us tend to show up holding out a tin cup. Put the penny of your prayer in this slot and pull the handle—that’s how I thought of it at first, and I think that’s typical.... That’s how I came to prayer nearly fifteen years back... and over the years prayer led me to God, and God led me to church—a journey fueled by gradually accruing comforts and some massively freakish coincidences.
