Who Do We Center
Jesus connected with all kinds of people - rich and poor, men and women and eunuchs (the non-binary people of the day), the sick and the healthy, the insiders and the outsiders. But as you read over his approach to life and his teaching, it’s clear that he centered those on the margins. Those who had fewer privileges. Sure, he loved them all. But he focused his attention more in one direction than the other.
So it’s not surprising that he encouraged his disciples to do the same. When he sent them out, it was “to the sick… the dead… those who have leprosy… and demons” – Matthew 10:8
What might it look like to try to adopt a little bit more of Jesus’s attitude and approach? As you think and pray about that, listen in to Debie Thomas the immigrant, woman, pastor, author who is helping guide us through this sermon series.
Go to the people who have no one to advocate for them, no one to hear them, no one to care for their needs. Go to the harassed, the mistreated, and the exhausted. Knock on their doors, listen to their stories, and place yourselves at their service.
When they tell you they are not okay, believe them. When they tell you they’re dying, believe them. When they tell you that demons are stalking their steps, believe them.
