Two Kinds of People
Love your neighbor as yourself. - Mark 12:31
Love your enemy. - Matthew 5:44
After close study, I have concluded that Jesus believed there are two kinds of people: your neighbors, whom you are supposed to love; and your enemies, whom you are supposed to love. - Rev. Mark Sandlin
So it sort of seems like we’re stuck, doesn’t it. We can’t get away with being unloving. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a neighbor or an enemy, we’re called to love.
As Brenna Rubio shared in the message on Sunday, sometimes we need to ‘crack the window’ on our enemies to see if we can tap into their humanity. That doesn’t mean we don’t carry our baseball bat while we do so (because they may be violently aggressive). But we give them an opportunity to engage their humanity.
Who is a neighbor you might be called to love?
Who is an enemy you might be called to love (and maybe it’s just cracking open the window)?
Talk with Jesus about these things. He’s well versed in loving both.
