Was Jesus a Refugee?

When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
- Matthew 2:13

The text suggests that soon after his birth, Jesus’s life was threatened because of the political aspirations of King Herod - and that God orchestrated a migration across international borders so that the baby Jesus could be safe (even though Herod killed many others - see Matthew 2:16-18).

Today, ponder the verse above and the image below.

  • What impact would it have on your view of Jesus if you understood him as a refugee?

  • What impact would it have on your view of refugees if you understood Jesus was one?

  • How might your life look different given what you’ve pondered?
