What is Confession?
Therefore confess your sins to each other… - James 5:15
Sometimes we think of confession as something momentous. But what if it were more like taking a walk in the neighborhood? Anne Lamott wrote, “My mind is a dangerous neighborhood I try not to go into alone.” There’s a remarkable amount of negativity, fear, and shame that lurks in our minds - no wonder it so dangerous to go there!
But what if you had people in your life who were very comfortable with whatever brokenness they might encounter in you? What if you were guaranteed to experience grace if you were vulnerable? That would definitely change things.
James’ command to confess our sins is just another invitation to deep community where we share our authentic selves, in all our glory and shame, and are received in love.
To make it very practical: Do you have a sense of what needs to be confessed today? Who might you confess to today?
