What Story Are You A Part Of?
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
- Luke 2:1-5
Mary and Joseph were swept up into a story far, far bigger than them. On the surface, it seemed like that story was dictated by the politics of the day. Historical events were driving their daily lives because powerful people called for massive migrations within an entire empire for the sake of taxation and military planning. Mary and Joseph were just bit players in that story.
Although that was the story everyone could see, it wasn’t the only story that was unfolding. God was writing another story - a story that would shape not just an empire, but a universe. Mary and Joseph were not just numbers in a tally sheet in God’s story. They were precious and beloved.
Talk with God about your role in the big story. Feel free to complain about the part you’re playing now. Feel free to give thanks for your role right now. Feel free to ask for more insight into what’s really going on. The great part of this story is that we get to talk with the Author about how the story is unfolding in our lives. Take some of that time right now.
