What Would Make This Week Restful

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. - Matthew 11:28-30 The Message

Jesus gets it that a lot of things, like religion (and sometimes the holidays) aren’t as restful as they were meant to be. Sometimes all the relational work can be tiring, really tiring.

For many of us there’s no easy solution to this. Our families and/or friends matter to us and it’s important to be together, even when it can be hard.

Perhaps one way to start in on this week is to do what Brenna Rubio talked about in the sermon yesterday - heading into the week with a ‘vibe check.’ What is it that you want or need this week? What might be a priority that might be worth working towards? Perhaps it’s as simple as realizing you want to play with the kids instead of watch football. Perhaps it has something to do with discussing (or not!) politics. Or finding time alone. Or being genuinely thankful.

Talk with Jesus about these things. He’s here now. His load isn’t heavy. He doesn’t have a big agenda for you squeeze your life into this week. See if you can let him care for you as you think through how to make this week a healthy one for you.
