When Doubt Unveils Injustice
One other aspect of healthy doubt is that it helps us evaluate what’s going on in our world and it can energize a fight against injustice. When we start to question ‘the company line’ - whether that’s what your family, church, or country have told you about who is in and who is out - sometimes the veil can come down and we can start to see how messed up the world is.
Listen to the prophet Habakkuk as he wrestles with this sort of doubt that is deconstructing the way he’d been taught to think about God:
Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. - Habakkuk 1:3
Do you remember a time when you started to wonder if certain things were right - even though you may have been told they were right your whole life up to that point? It can feel a bit like a splinter under the skin or a pebble in the shoe… until you stop and really look at things and question them. As someone has said, “When God hates all the same people you do, you can be sure you’ve made God in your own image.” Starting to doubt that kind of God can be immensely healthy.
Today, take some time to talk with Jesus and ask for help in calling into question the inherited beliefs you hold that are not healthy.
