When God Speaks from OUTSIDE the Box

Have you noticed how God will often speak in ways we don’t anticipate? Early on in the story of God’s people, right after God declared that Abram would be the founder of God’s people, Melchizedek shows up. We know nothing of Melchizedek besides what’s in the below text, but it’s clear that he was not from ‘within the people of God.’ He was an outsider. And yet, he was considered ‘priest of God Most High.’ As you read the story, think a little bit about the times when God has met you through someone who was not part of the easily recognizable tribe of believers.

After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine.He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Creator of heaven and earth.
And praise be to God Most High,
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

What stands out most to you from what Melchizedek says? When have you experienced anything like this sort of blessing/words of affirmation from someone outside your religious group? Why do you think God speaks this way with such regularity?

Ask the Spirit to help you listen for the ways God may be speaking to you this day that are ‘outside the box.’
