Will You Dine At Their Table?

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus over for a meal. He went to the Pharisee’s house and sat down at the dinner table. - Luke 7:16

The Pharisees were not big fans of Jesus. That's pretty clear throughout the gospels. You could say that they were enemies.

And yet Jesus accepts the invitation.

As we'll see tomorrow, the invitation isn't exactly sincere, and the Pharisee isn't planning on being particularly kind to Jesus. That's probably not a big surprise to Jesus, right? But what does Jesus do, but show up anyway.

It seems like Jesus just can't give up on hope. He just believes something good can happen, even in the heart of his enemy. By the end of the story, there's clearly an invitation for the Pharisees to respond to Jesus, but the story ends before we find out what happens. So we're left wondering. And we're left pondering if we're willing to take the kind of risks that Jesus does.

Whose house will you go into this week? What invitation will you accept? And what if it's God's invitation to step into a setting that may not be comfortable?
