Your Connection with the Holy Spirit
At that time Jesus [was] full of joy through the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:21
Hildegard of Bingen, the twelfth century mystic and church leader, wrote that "Everything that is in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness." She clearly understood that when thinking about the Holy Spirit we don’t get to nail everything down neat and clean. Instead, we’re going to need to embrace the mystery of life in the Spirit - and how connected the Spirit is to Jesus, to the Father, and to us.
The old theologian John Calvin suggested that we think of the Spirit as God on the inside of us - guiding our thoughts and evoking our emotion. Today, reflect on what you know about the Holy Spirit. As you think about what you know about the Spirit, ponder what knowledge is information and what is experience (neither is bad!). What questions do you have about the Holy Spirit? And do you have a sense of what it might look like to continue on the journey towards Jesus in this area of the spiritual life (which would include being filled with the Holy Spirit and joy)?
