Learn Your Own Rhythm

On Sunday, Erna Kim Hackett talked about how common it is to try to fit into someone else’s approach to the spiritual journey. We’ve been thinking about that theme this week - how to find our own rhythm when it comes to how we seek God.

So, so much of this process is learning to pay attention to ourselves, to notice when we’re being inauthentic, to notice when we’re just ‘giving in’ to either guilt or to someone else’s expectations. Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from each other about how to follow Christ. It just means that we need to do so with the clarity that it’s still our own journey in the end and whatever we learn will need to be adapted to fit who we are.

So take some time around this theme with Jesus. Listen as he speaks to you through these words. Wonder what he might be trying to say. Pay attention to where you may have picked up some unhealthy habits. Sense where some new freedom might be welcome.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” - Matthew 11:28-30, The Message
