An Invitation to Ugly Prayers

The forty day journey towards Easter called Lent begins this Wednesday. As a church, we will be reading through the Psalms over the next six weeks as part of our Lenten journey. Primarily we’ll be looking at some of the emotions in the Psalms. That’s because emotions are the language of the soul:

Emotions are the language of the soul. They are the cry that gives the heart a voice. To understand our deepest passions and conviction, we must learn to listen to the cry of the soul, our emotions. In neglecting our intense emotions, we are false to ourselves and lose a wonderful opportunity to know God.

- Dan Allender, The Cry of the Soul

The invitation of the Psalms is to be completely authentic with God - no matter how raw, how irreverent, how ecstatic, or how ugly we are. See if you can take this invitation to heart:

Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge. - Psalm 62:8

What do you think about being this honest to God - is it something you’re comfortable with or not? Spend some time talking with God about your desire to pray more honestly and authentically these days.
