Being Present With and For Others - Denia Bradshaw
How often are we inclined to be present with one another? How about in practicing presence with each other?
In a world that encourages independence, we are encouraged to work toward individual success and a life without needing to rely on anyone else. However, the truth and the reality of it really is that we are genuinely better together.
On Sunday, we got to know and learn from the work of two of our church members, Anita Gibbons and Carol Bittman. They spoke about being present with people and listening to them, referring to this work as a “ministry of presence.” The organization they partner with is called, Higher Love, Inc., a program for prisoner care that finds value and beauty in how we join and unify collectively. Additionally, Higher Love thrives in the sharing and knowing of the following truths; that folks are love and have great worth, that God is with all of us, and that we are never forgotten. How beautiful.
Sunday's sermon was a great reminder that we are not meant to be alone or do this alone. We have a need to connect to each other and to be present with one another.
Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 AMP
Likened to what Anita and Carol shared regarding the ripple effect of this ministry of presence: Where might you find an opportunity to be present with someone in your life? Where can you take some time in the following week to ensure you connect with others? What needs, hopes, or desires might you have that you can share with someone in the coming days or weeks?
God, we may not always know how to be there for others nor how to connect with others when we have needs. Will you kindly prompt us in the following days and weeks to be present for others and ourselves? Guide us to one another and to You. Remind us that we do not have to do this alone and that we can be in community. Lead us toward unity and love in this ministry of presence. Thank you for showing us we do not have to embark this life alone any longer. We have You and we have each other. We love you. Thank You for Your unconditional love. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
