Finding the Real Me

Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. - Colossians 3:3-4, The Message

Paul was writing to a group of Christians he’s never met who lived in small town in what is now western Turkey. He’s trying to help them figure out that since following Jesus, they’ve been invited into finding their truest self. It’s not something that other people can see, because it’s not about what we look like on the outside. It’s about the radical transformation of our souls. And it’s not like we’re getting transformed into something wholly new. Not even! Instead, we’re getting transformed into who we were always designed to be.

Some of the best news of the Good News (the Gospel) is that we get to be our authentic selves. No more parading around trying to please people or impress people - not even trying to please ourselves. Instead, we get to embrace how beloved we really are, which frees us up to stop hiding both our shame and our glory. We’re no longer scared by either! Instead, we’re on this path towards being exactly who God made us to be.

What do you think you might find if your truest self really came out? Talk with Jesus about that.
