God of Mystery, the Curious, and the Truth-seakers
On Sunday, Nicole Macatrao led us in such a thoughtful prayer. Today, pray through this prayer again, pausing on the lines that speak to you and dwelling there with Christ.
God of mystery, of the curious, and of the truth-seekers
Thank you for being big enough to handle our questions.
Often it is through our questions and not answers
that we break down assumptions, judgements, differences,
and humble ourselves to learning more about the people you have created and love.
Help us continue to navigate the tension between knowing and learning.
Churches should be a place
where doubts, questions, curiosity
and in turn our authentic selves
should be welcomed,
but they are so often not.
The church needs to do so much better.
Help us each model the kind of welcome to questions and thoughts
that Jesus did that day with the Samaritan woman.
There are a lot of major problems and hurt in our world right now.
We are bombarded with a flurry of questions
about how to fix our country
and the anxiety that sets in from them is exhausting and debilitating.
In moments like these, it is important to remember that even these questions,
accompanied with rage and sadness,
are not big enough to overwhelm you.
And that we are welcome to continue asking them.
I pray for Lafayette and all our schools and our teachers,
for the fatigue and the sadness of the people,
that we may find rest in more spaces
where we can be our authentic selves and ask questions,
and I pray for our elections and our government,
that we elect leaders that embody the kind of radical love you stand for.
