How Are You At Letting People Serve You?

The night before he was betrayed, Jesus stooped down to serve his friends by washing their feet. It was the role of a servant or a slave, yet he chose it so that he could care for them. But it was not easy for all of them to receive it. Listen to this part of the conversation:

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”  “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” - John 13:6-7

Peter was uncomfortable having Jesus wash his feet. There could have been so many reasons why. One way or the other he resisted receiving from Jesus. And so do we.

In the message at church we had a time of crowd-sourcing why Peter may have felt uncomfortable. So many insightful things were shared. Here are some of the responses just from our zoom audience. See which you relate to and ask yourself why. The question was: Why do we resist letting God/others serve us?

  • I want to be serving

  • I don't like the feeling of being dependent on someone else.

  • [I don’t like] the feeling that I am needy.

  • I don't like being vulnerable

  • Not used to any help at all

  • Pride. [Receiving] makes us feel weak.

  • It’s just easier to do it myself.

  • Feel like I’m lumped in with “those who really need it”

  • In a way, we are being more giving by actually accepting help.

  • I resonate all the above answers!
