The God Who Serves
When Jesus referred to himself he called himself ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου which traditionally has been translated ‘the Son of Man’ but probably is better rendered as ‘the Human One’. Regardless of how you interpret it, the image is that Jesus is one of us - and not just anyone, but a servant. Pretty crazy to think that the God who made the universe would show up to serve us.
in Jesus’s own words: The Human One did not come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:27).
So much of religion is about ‘serving God’ - and yet Jesus made is crystal clear that’s not why he came. That was never the point. For Jesus, his purpose in coming was to care for our needs, to do what’s best for us, to tend to us.
That’s not typically how people think of their god.
